A talking-animal comedy about an unlikely friendship and one unfortunate splash.
Shiro had plenty of water to explore and nobody to tell about it. Then Whiskers appeared at the edge of the backyard pond, sitting so still that only the tip of her tail moved. Shiro watched the cat. The cat watched Shiro.
Shiro was nervous at first, as cats were known for preying on small fish like her. But as she swam closer, she noticed that Whiskers was more interested in playing than eating her. Shiro decided to take a chance and swim up to the cat.
To Shiro’s surprise, Whiskers wanted a game, not dinner. The cat waved a paw above the water while Shiro swam circles beneath her watchful nose. Before long, their daily meetings were the homeowners’ favorite garden spectacle.
One day, a butterfly fluttered over the pond. Shiro sprang after it and splashed back into the water just below Whiskers’ nose. The startled cat leaped backward, discovered there was no backward left, and toppled into the pond.
Shiro could not help laughing as Whiskers paddled furiously toward the edge. When the cat finally climbed out, her fur stood in soggy spikes. She looked at Shiro, looked at the butterfly, and shook herself with great indignation.
From that day on, Whiskers became a regular visitor to the koi pond, often stopping by to play with Shiro and chase the occasional butterfly. The two unlikely friends proved that even the most different creatures could find common ground and have a little fun.
Whiskers kept visiting. She simply chose a wider patch of ground—and treated every butterfly as a potential accomplice.
