Acclimating koi means planning a controlled transfer into suitable water. The right method depends on how the fish traveled. An overnight shipping bag, a short local trip, and a move between established systems should not all receive the same automatic drip-acclimation routine.
Prepare Before Opening the Bag
- Have a separate, ready quarantine system with working filtration, aeration, and a secure cover.
- Check destination temperature, pH, ammonia, and nitrite. Treat replacement tap water for chlorine and chloramine as required.
- Read the supplier's arrival instructions before delivery. Have suitable transfer equipment and a container for discarding transport water.
- Keep the arrival area calm and shaded. Avoid leaving a sealed bag in direct sun.
Koi Shipped Overnight
Fish produce ammonia and carbon dioxide during transport. Opening a shipping bag or mixing in different water can change its chemistry and make accumulated ammonia more hazardous. Blackwater Creek's arrival instructions specifically caution against mixing destination water into overnight shipping water.
Follow the shipper's procedure for temperature adjustment while the bag remains sealed. Use measured temperatures rather than a timer alone. Once the receiving system is ready and the prescribed temperature adjustment is complete, transfer promptly using appropriate koi-handling equipment; discard the shipping water away from fish systems.
Short Trips and Transfers Between Systems
For a short local trip, the supplier may recommend a different adjustment procedure. For a move from quarantine to the pond, compare both systems' temperature and water chemistry first. If the difference is substantial, correct the receiving conditions or obtain specific advice before moving the fish. There is no universal safe temperature jump for every koi.
If Arrival Conditions Are Unexpected
A leaking bag, severe distress, or a major temperature mismatch requires prompt advice from the supplier or a fish veterinarian. Avoid prolonging exposure to poor transport water while improvising a lengthy mixing routine.
Watch the Fish After Transfer
Check breathing, balance, swimming, and equipment operation. Monitor quarantine water closely, and keep a record of the arrival conditions. Persistent gasping, loss of balance, or worsening lethargy needs investigation; do not assume it is simply normal adjustment.
