Aka Hajiro Koi: Red Koi with White-Tipped Fins

Aka Hajiro are non-metallic red koi with white-tipped fins. The name also appears as Aka Haijiro or Beni Hajiro in hobby descriptions. Their attraction is the small contrast between a largely solid red body and the pale fin edges, rather than a complex pattern of colored patches.

How to Identify Aka Hajiro

  • A red or orange-red body with no major white body pattern.
  • White tips on the pectoral fins; compare the two sides.
  • A non-metallic finish rather than an orange Ogon sheen.

Compare Similar Varieties

Compare Benigoi for a solid red koi without the defining fin-tip feature, and Hajiro for the dark-bodied counterpart. A red-and-white Kohaku has a body pattern rather than being defined by fin tips. Look beyond one pale edge and check the whole fish before deciding on a label.

Choosing and Observing Aka Hajiro

Look for consistent red and clear fin contrast while the fish swims normally. Observe whether fins are intact, and ask for dated photographs if a pale area is new or ambiguous. Pattern symmetry may appeal to a collector, but an aesthetic preference is separate from health and pond suitability. Do not skip the usual purchase and quarantine checks.
