Beni Kumonryu Koi: Red, Black & White Doitsu Koi

Beni Kumonryu add red coloration to the black-and-white appearance of Kumonryu-type koi. They are Doitsu and non-metallic. The contrast can be dramatic, but the black pattern may change enough that a young fish later looks quite different from the photograph that first attracted its owner.

How to Identify Beni Kumonryu

  • Red areas combined with black and white on reduced-scaled skin.
  • A Doitsu appearance, which may include rows of larger scales.
  • A non-metallic finish rather than the continuous sheen of Beni Kikokuryu.

Compare Similar Varieties

Compare Kumonryu when red is absent. A metallic red, white, and black Doitsu fish needs a closer comparison with Beni Kikokuryu, rather than being identified by its three colors alone. Names can be used loosely in sales listings, so ask the seller to explain scaling, luster, and the individual fish's identification.

Choosing and Observing Beni Kumonryu

Judge the fish's current appearance and review older photographs where available. No particular black-to-white seasonal cycle or permanent red balance should be promised. Look for an intact body and fins as well as a pattern you like. Maintain appropriate water conditions; altering chemistry to chase a color change is not a selection or care strategy.
