Ki Bekko Koi: Yellow Koi with Black Markings

Ki Bekko are non-metallic yellow koi with separate black sumi markings. The yellow provides the background; black creates the contrast. They share the Bekko pattern style of Shiro Bekko, but replace the white ground with yellow. The variety is identified by both its color and the way the black is arranged.

How to Identify Ki Bekko

  • Yellow background with discrete black markings along the body.
  • Black that reads as separate patches rather than broad wrapping bands.
  • A non-metallic appearance; ordinary water reflections do not count as metallic skin.

Compare Similar Varieties

The closest comparison is Ki Utsuri, another yellow-and-black koi. Ki Utsuri usually has a stronger wrapping black pattern and may carry black across the head. Do not identify the fish from yellow alone. Look at the sides as it turns, where the difference in black placement is often easier to see.

Choosing and Observing Ki Bekko

Compare yellow tone and evenness under similar lighting, then judge whether the sumi creates a balanced pattern. Avoid a decision based only on a claim of rarity. Ask about the individual fish, its age, recent photographs, and seller health records. Small sumi marks can change, but their future direction cannot be promised.
