Compare Ai Goromo for blue-edged red scales and Budo Goromo for a grape-colored overlay. A Sanke has distinct sumi markings added to a red-and-white pattern, while Goromo shading is related to the red plates themselves. Look closely rather than identifying any dark red-and-white koi as Sumi Goromo.
Choosing and Observing Sumi Goromo
Judge whether the dark pattern remains balanced and visible from your usual viewing angle. A scarcity claim is not a reason to buy immediately, and darker is not automatically better for every collector. Request clear views of the white ground, pattern edges, and fins. Ask for development photographs if the seller is selling future potential rather than present appearance.
