Hana Learns to Write: A Koi Fantasy

By koisensei, 11 April, 2023

A creative fantasy about a koi discovering the pleasure of words.

Hana had watched people visit the pond for years. One afternoon, she noticed what they kept looking at between glances at the fish: little notebooks covered in marks. A visitor added another mark with a pen. Hana swam closer. What could those scratches mean?

As the days passed, Hana watched the humans closely as they read and wrote on these strange objects. She observed their movements, the way they held their fingers and the way the letters flowed from their pens. And as she watched, something began to stir inside her. She felt a strange urge to try it herself, to put her own fins to work and see if she too could write.

Her first letters were crooked. In this enchanted pond, a flat stone served as a writing desk and a reed made a serviceable pen. Hana practiced one shape, then another, until the marks began to look less like accidental scratches and more like words.

As Hana's writing skills improved, she started to write more and more. She wrote about her adventures in the pond, her thoughts and feelings, and even poems about the beauty of the pond. And to her surprise, the humans started to take notice. They would come to the pond and read her writing, marveling at the beauty of the words written by a koi.

Before long, Hana became famous in the human world. People came from far and wide just to read her writing and marvel at the talent of this amazing fish. And Hana was happy, knowing that her writing had brought joy and inspiration to so many.

In the end, Hana's writing brought her more than fame and recognition. It brought her a sense of purpose and fulfillment, as she realized that she had a unique talent that could touch the hearts of others. And so she continued to write, day after day, exploring the depths of her imagination and inspiring others with her words.

The pond was still beautiful, but visitors now lingered beside Hana’s writing stone. Sometimes they read a poem aloud. Hana listened from below, already deciding what to write next.
