A fantasy journey through a forest river and over an enchanted waterfall.
Kai could have drawn his pond from memory: every rock, every plant, every place where the afternoon light reached the bottom. Beyond it lay a forest river. He had listened to stories about that river for years. One evening, he decided he wanted a story of his own.
He waited until the other fish had settled, then found the narrow, enchanted channel hidden behind the pond’s reeds. The current carried him into the forest river, and the familiar garden disappeared behind him.
Kai swam down the river, marveling at the sights and sounds around him. He saw colorful fish he had never seen before, darting in and out of the rocks and plants along the riverbank. He saw frogs and turtles basking in the sun on the river's edge, and even caught a glimpse of a deer drinking from the water's edge.
As he swam, Kai began to realize that there was a whole world beyond his pond, full of wonders he had never even imagined. He felt a sense of freedom and exhilaration that he had never experienced before.
Eventually, Kai reached a waterfall. In that magical forest, silver ribbons of water curled upward beside the falling stream. He followed them from pool to pool, climbing higher until he reached the top.
At the top, Kai saw a breathtaking view of the forest and the river stretching out before him. He felt a sense of accomplishment and joy that he had never known before.
As the sun began to set, Kai retraced his route through the waterfall’s silver pools and along the river. At last he found the hidden channel and slipped between the pond’s familiar reeds. His friends were waking to an evening full of questions.
Kai tried to describe the view from the waterfall. He got as far as “You could see everything,” then started again. The pond had not changed while he was away. The stories he could tell beside its rocks had.
