A reflective fictional story about a koi and the changing garden around her.
Sakura knew the garden by what appeared on the water: pale petals in spring, leaf shadows in summer and the first red reflection of autumn. Each season changed the view, even when she followed the same route through the pond.
As the seasons changed, so did Sakura's world. She had seen many cycles of life, each one bringing its own set of challenges and wonders. In spring, Sakura reveled in the beauty of cherry blossoms drifting down to kiss the water's surface. It was a season of renewal and growth, and Sakura's vivid colors shimmered under the dappled sunlight.
Summer brought warm water and a thickening green bloom. The garden keeper watched the pond, maintained its aeration and cleared accumulating waste. Sakura and the others moved beneath the shade while work continued above them. By evening, familiar ripples returned to the surface.
Autumn colored the garden red and gold. Sakura’s companions moved more slowly as the water cooled, and the keeper lifted fallen leaves before they settled. The pond grew quieter, one small change at a time.
Winter put ice across much of the surface. Below it, Sakura moved slowly in the deeper water while the keeper maintained the pond’s winter support. The garden above was nearly silent. She waited through the season, conserving her activity.
Finally, the warmth of spring returned, and Sakura emerged from her winter slumber, her colors once again vibrant and resplendent. She had survived another cycle of seasons, and with each passing year, she gained a deeper appreciation for the beauty and fragility of life in the pond.
Years later, visitors still paused at the pond when the cherry blossoms opened. Sakura passed beneath the petals, following a route she knew well. The garden had changed again. That was part of what made it familiar.
