Setting Up a Koi Quarantine Tank: Equipment & Readiness

By koisensei, 20 November, 2025

A quarantine tank must support koi reliably while keeping its water and equipment separate from the main pond. An empty container is not a ready system. Choose usable space for the actual fish and prepare filtration, aeration, water, and monitoring before arrival.

Plan the System

  • A smooth, fish-safe container with room for normal movement and observation.
  • A secure cover that allows appropriate gas exchange and safe access.
  • Biological filtration suitable for the load plus practical waste removal.
  • Reliable aeration and a plan for loss of power or flow.
  • Measured working water volume for any later product calculations.

Prepare Water and Filtration

Use water conditioned for its source. Check temperature, pH, ammonia, and nitrite, and establish the biological filtration before relying on it for arrivals. Clear water does not prove that a filter is ready. Any seeded media must come from an appropriate known source; moving wet media can also move pathogens. Keep the quarantine filter separate from the pond circuit.

Control Location and Access

Choose a location protected from rapid temperature changes, contamination, predators, and accidental access. A heater is a managed tool where needed, not a reason to raise every quarantine to an arbitrary temperature. Allow enough access to inspect equipment and remove waste without chasing fish repeatedly.

Prepare Dedicated Tools

Label nets, bowls, hoses, and cleaning equipment. Arrange safe drainage that does not return quarantine water to the pond. Keep source records, a test kit, a thermometer, and fish-health contacts available. If you cannot maintain separation and life support, postpone the purchase.

Confirm Readiness and Plan Release

Recheck the operating system before delivery and monitor more often as load changes. Use the quarantine protocol for exposure tracking, observation, and release decisions, and arrival instructions for transfer. The equipment setup alone cannot guarantee disease-free fish.
