Check the pond and your care plan before choosing the fish. This readiness review is for someone still deciding whether to buy. A filled pond, clear water, or a few weeks of pump operation does not demonstrate that the system can support the intended fish and food load.
Confirm the Essential Functions
- Know actual usable volume, adult swimming space, and seasonal operation.
- Demonstrate filtration readiness with the chosen fishless cycling protocol.
- Prepare source water appropriately and record ammonia, nitrite, pH, alkalinity, and temperature.
- Confirm aeration, solids removal, equipment access, and a failure plan.
- Have a separate ready quarantine system and dedicated equipment.
Do a Care Rehearsal
Run through filter cleaning, safe refilling, testing, and equipment inspection before the pond contains fish. Check whether another person can understand the procedure. If the maintenance route is difficult or the water volume is uncertain, resolve that now rather than after purchasing several koi.
Budget for More Than the Fish
Include electricity, water, food, tests, consumables, quarantine, repairs, and professional help when needed. Compare realistic local costs and leave a contingency. Young inexpensive koi still become adult fish with an ongoing waste load; a low purchase price does not make an undersized system suitable.
Make a Go or Postpone Decision
Postpone if water or equipment readiness is unresolved, quarantine is unprepared, or you cannot attend the arrival. If ready, start modestly and monitor as feeding and growth increase. Use the purchase-day checklist next. Pond capacity and equipment planning explain the supporting decisions.
