The Koi Pond Nitrogen Cycle: Ammonia, Nitrite & Nitrate

By koisensei, 25 October, 2025

The pond nitrogen cycle links feeding, fish waste, microbial processing, and nitrogen removal. A biological filter can convert ammonia through nitrite to nitrate, but conversion is not the same as removing every form of nitrogen from the system.

Where the Waste Starts

Fish metabolism releases ammonia, much of it through the gills. Uneaten food, feces, and decaying material also contribute as they break down. Even an unfed fish continues to produce waste, so stopping food does not make filtration unnecessary.

Follow the Main Path

  1. Food supplies nutrients to the fish and adds to the system's waste load.
  2. Ammonia-oxidizing microbes convert ammonia to nitrite.
  3. Nitrite-oxidizing microbes convert nitrite to nitrate.
  4. Water replacement, harvested plant material, or an appropriately designed removal process exports nitrogen.

These functional groups include more than two named bacterial species. Nitrate is generally less acutely toxic than ammonia or nitrite, but it should not be treated as harmless at every concentration.

Give the Biofilter Suitable Conditions

Microbes need colonizable surfaces, oxygen, suitable flow, and water chemistry. Nitrification consumes alkalinity and can contribute to a pH decline when buffering is inadequate. Cleaning, treatments, interruption, temperature changes, and load changes can affect performance. Read biofilter care.

How to Tell Whether It Is Working

Test ammonia and nitrite and track nitrate, pH, alkalinity, and temperature. New clean water can show zero ammonia and nitrite simply because no load has been applied. A bacteria bottle, visible algae, or elapsed time is not a readiness test. Use fishless cycling and verification before stocking.

Keep It in Balance

Match feeding and adult fish load to the working system, remove solids, and recheck after changes. Do not assume plants or extra media will permanently eliminate accumulating nitrate. Link chemistry interpretation with water management and feeding records.
