An original magical rescue story; its extraordinary koi belongs to a fantasy world.
For years, the town’s koi pond had been a place to stop and watch the colors move beneath the water. Nobody expected one of its residents to become a rescuer. Then a storm filled the streets and carried the pond beyond its edges.
One day, disaster struck. A powerful storm swept through the town, causing flooding and destruction in its wake. The koi pond overflowed, and the rushing waters swept many of the koi away from their home. The remaining koi struggled to stay afloat as the water level rose rapidly.
As the storm raged on, a young boy named Liam and his family watched in horror as their home was flooded. They were trapped on the second floor with no way to escape. But then, something miraculous happened. One of the koi, a brave and determined fish, swam towards their window and began tapping on the glass with its tail.
Liam opened the window and saw water rising toward the sill. The koi shimmered, growing impossibly large as it crossed the flooded room. It nudged the family toward the window, then waited while they climbed onto its broad back.
Liam and his family climbed onto the koi's back and it swam through the raging waters, dodging debris and avoiding obstacles. The koi brought them to safety on higher ground and then swam back to the pond to help its fellow koi.
The koi worked tirelessly to keep the other fish afloat, swimming back and forth to provide support and guidance. It even used its body to block debris and protect the other koi from harm.
When the water receded, rescue workers brought Liam and his family home from the high ground. They returned to the pond and found it full of familiar colors: the great fish had gathered the missing koi back into shelter. It was small again now, moving quietly among the others.
The town remembered the rescue whenever someone paused beside the pond. Liam always looked for the small fish first. It never explained how it had grown large enough to carry a family. In that town, after that storm, nobody needed it to.
