A comic fantasy set in Aqua Springs, a city with some very unusual delivery routes.
Jack watched the pigeons carry messages across Aqua Springs and wondered why they got all the interesting jobs. He knew the city’s water channels better than any bird. Surely someone needed a parcel delivered along them.
One sunny day, as Jack observed a group of pigeons hurriedly delivering messages across the city, a peculiar idea popped into his head. Why couldn't a fish like him deliver parcels just as well? Ignoring the skeptical glances of his pond companions, Jack decided to embark on an unconventional career path.
With Oscar the otter, Jack designed a watertight parcel carrier for his back. Aqua Springs’ enchanted canals reached nearly every doorway, with little raised pools beside the streets. Oscar drew a route map. Jack immediately folded it the wrong way.
The first deliveries did not go smoothly. A street corner and a canal corner were not always the same thing. Jack made one spectacular turn, splashed a pedestrian’s shoes and decided that the map probably mattered after all.
Passersby stared at the fish moving through the street-side channels with parcels on his back. Children waved. Adults checked the address labels, as if correct paperwork might explain an otherwise impossible courier.
Jack's escapades grew legendary. There was the time he accidentally raced a pizza delivery guy, outswimming him to the customer's doorstep. Then, there was the unforgettable incident when he "parked" in a busy intersection, causing a traffic jam that had commuters shaking their heads and chuckling.
Flowers became his specialty. Jack leaped between the little delivery pools and presented each bouquet with a flourish from the doorstep water. The first recipient applauded. After that, he added the flourish to his standard service.
As word of Jack's aquatic exploits spread, Aqua Springs embraced its newest and most unconventional courier. His deliveries became a quirky symbol of the city's unique charm, and his story was even featured in local newspapers and on television.
At the depot, Oscar asked whether the new route map was helping. “Immensely,” Jack said. He had delivered every parcel, only dampened three pairs of shoes and won a race against a pizza courier. Oscar began drawing a shorter route.
