Shiro Matsuba Koi: White Koi with a Pinecone Scale Pattern

Shiro Matsuba are white, non-metallic koi with dark scale centers that create a reticulated or pinecone effect. The pattern follows individual scales instead of forming large black patches across the body. This makes scale arrangement and repeated contrast more useful identification clues than the mere presence of black and white.

How to Identify Shiro Matsuba

  • A white background with dark centers repeated across the body scales.
  • A netted scale pattern rather than Bekko-style black patches.
  • A non-metallic appearance, distinct from metallic Gin Matsuba descriptions.

Compare Similar Varieties

Compare Aka Matsuba for a red background with a similar scale pattern. Asagi has blue-gray reticulation with red or orange accents along the lower body and fins. A metallic silver Matsuba should not be identified as ordinary Shiro Matsuba solely because both look light-colored in a top-view photograph.

Choosing and Observing Shiro Matsuba

Study whether the repeated pattern looks coherent along the back and shoulders. View several angles to separate scale color from reflections. Missing scales or irregular marks deserve questions about the fish's history rather than a diagnosis from a picture. Select overall body quality and an appearance you enjoy; perfectly identical scale centers are an aesthetic ideal, not a care requirement.
