Aka Matsuba Koi: Red Koi with a Pinecone Scale Pattern

Aka Matsuba are non-metallic red koi with dark centers on the body scales. The repeated markings create the Matsuba pinecone effect over the red background. Rather than focusing on one dramatic dark area, look for the way the pattern is repeated across many scales.

How to Identify Aka Matsuba

  • Red or orange-red body color with darker scale centers.
  • A scale-by-scale pattern rather than isolated Bekko sumi patches.
  • A non-metallic finish rather than a continuous gold or silver luster.

Compare Similar Varieties

Compare Benigoi for a red koi without the defining dark-centered scale pattern. Shiro Matsuba uses a white background. Kujaku combines metallic luster, a light ground, colored markings, and reticulation, making it more than simply a red Matsuba. Check the background and finish before comparing the net pattern.

Choosing and Observing Aka Matsuba

Look for readable reticulation and consistent red in photographs taken under similar light. The appearance of dark scale centers should be considered with the body shape and overall condition. Ask about missing scales or old damage rather than treating every irregularity as part of the Matsuba effect. A pleasing pattern need not have identical darkness at every scale.
