Kujaku are metallic patterned koi with a light platinum-colored ground, red or orange markings, and dark-centered scales. The combination of luster, color pattern, and Matsuba-style reticulation creates their distinctive appearance. They are not simply a Kohaku with extra shine or any koi with a dark net pattern.

How to Identify Kujaku
- Metallic luster on a light ground.
- Red or orange pattern areas over the body.
- Dark scale centers creating a regular reticulated effect.
Compare Similar Varieties
Compare Goshiki for a non-metallic netted variety with red patterning. Kikusui is a metallic Doitsu comparison without the same full scale-by-scale pattern. Tancho Kujaku restricts the colored marking to the head. Checking finish and scaling before the red pattern makes these comparisons easier.
Choosing and Observing Kujaku
Look at all three features together: sheen, reticulation, and the colored pattern. Good lighting should show the scale effect without washing out the red or white. A strong pattern on one side can look different as the fish turns. Judge body shape and condition independently of the decorative scale pattern, and ask for clear, recent views of the individual.
