Kikusui Koi: Metallic Red-and-White Doitsu Koi

Kikusui are commonly described as metallic red-and-white Doitsu koi. Their smooth-looking skin and platinum ground make the red or orange-red markings stand out. The name is used with some overlap in Hariwake descriptions, so color, pattern, scaling, and finish should all be examined when comparing fish.

How to Identify Kikusui

  • A light metallic ground with red or orange-red patterning.
  • A Doitsu appearance with few scales or rows of larger mirror scales.
  • Continuous skin luster, rather than only reflective individual Ginrin scales.

Compare Similar Varieties

Compare a non-metallic Doitsu Kohaku if the fish lacks persistent metallic shine. Compare Doitsu Hariwake for yellow or orange patterned examples. Breeders and dealers may draw the naming boundary differently; ask for the seller's description and inspect the actual fish rather than assuming the two labels are always exact synonyms.

Choosing and Observing Kikusui

Evaluate the body pattern as a whole and check that the metallic ground is visible from several angles. Red edges can be attractive without implying a show result or fixed future appearance. Avoid simple parent-pair recipes: ornamental traits vary among offspring, and a breeding cross does not guarantee a uniform batch of Kikusui. Choose current quality and documented history.
