Goshiki are non-metallic koi typically combining a red pattern with a reticulated gray or darker background. The name means five colors, but it is not a checklist requiring five sharply separated patches. Individuals range from a lighter netted appearance to a much darker ground with striking red contrast.

How to Identify Goshiki
- Red patterning over a gray, blue-gray, or darker netted ground.
- Reticulation visible beyond the red pattern areas.
- A non-metallic finish rather than the continuous sheen of Kujaku.
Compare Similar Varieties
Compare Ai Goromo when the dark edging is concentrated mainly in the red plates and the white background is clear. Kujaku adds metallic luster to its patterned, reticulated appearance. These differences can be hard to judge in a dark photograph, so inspect the ground, colored plates, and head in more than one view.
Choosing and Observing Goshiki
Choose the contrast and pattern you enjoy now while allowing for development. Do not expect every young Goshiki to become uniformly dark, or every red plate to remain visually untouched by shading. The name does not prove a particular parental cross. Ask about the actual fish and look at dated images rather than purchasing an assumed final color scheme.
