A heroic fantasy about a silver koi, a turtle mentor and a threatening heron.
Albert’s silver scales looked like armor. The fish of Lotus Pond considered that an attractive coincidence. Albert considered it a sign that he ought to do something knightly.
Albert had always been a dreamer. He often found himself staring at the waterfall that cascaded down from the cliffs above, imagining grand tales of adventure and heroism. While the other fish swam around, content with their peaceful lives, Albert yearned for something more.
One day, as the whispers of a distant threat reached Lotus Pond, Albert's dreams began to align with a newfound purpose. A menacing heron had been spotted in the area, its shadow casting a dark cloud over the pond. The other fish cowered, fearing the heron's sharp beak and piercing eyes.
But not Albert.
Inspired by tales of knights defending their kingdoms, Albert made a bold decision. He would become a protector of Lotus Pond. With every splash of his tail and every leap from the water, he practiced his movements, imagining himself as a swift and valiant knight.
As the heron's visits became more frequent, Albert's training intensified. He sought guidance from the wise old turtle, Taiki, who had witnessed the rise and fall of many generations of fish in the pond. Taiki taught Albert patience, discipline, and the importance of inner strength.
The day of reckoning arrived. The heron descended upon Lotus Pond, its dark wings casting a foreboding shadow. The other fish scattered, but Albert held his ground. With determination burning in his eyes, he faced the heron and challenged its dominance.
Their battle was fierce. Albert darted and weaved, his scales shimmering like flames as he evaded the heron's strikes. With each nimble maneuver, Albert's movements grew more refined, his determination unwavering. He summoned the lessons from his dreams, channeling the spirit of chivalry and bravery that had fueled his ambitions.
At last the heron hesitated. Albert sprang from the enchanted water and landed across its shoulders. His tail struck the long beak just as the startled bird raised its head. For one confused moment, the knight had entirely the wrong kind of mount.
The heron cried out and took flight. Albert slid from its back and splashed into Lotus Pond, where the others cheered so loudly that he almost missed Taiki’s quiet laugh.
Albert still watched the waterfall and dreamed of adventures. Now, when the younger fish asked about his armor, he told them about Taiki’s lessons first. The silver scales made a good beginning to a tale. The people who helped him made the rest.
