Buying Your Next Koi: Compare the Fish, Records & Total Cost

A useful koi shortlist compares the individual fish, its history, and the commitment it adds to your system. Decide your budget and adult capacity first, then compare choices. A beautiful pattern or seller reputation cannot replace quarantine or prove a fish free of infection.

Build a Like-for-Like Shortlist

  • Record current size, estimated age, variety, scaling, and whether sex is confirmed or estimated.
  • Ask for recent photographs and a normal swimming video of the actual fish.
  • Request source, holding, quarantine, testing, and treatment information.
  • Include packing, transport, and any planned quarantine or care costs.

Keep Three Decisions Separate

First consider condition and history. Then consider whether the fish suits your pond and care capacity. Finally compare the pattern and body features you enjoy. A high show-related grade does not answer the first two questions, and a lower-priced koi may be an attractive pet without competition ambitions.

Ask About Potential Honestly

Young patterns, growth, temperament, and estimated sex can change. Ask what is visible today and what is only a prediction. A bloodline or attractive sibling photo is information, not an assurance of a specific adult result. Use the variety directory and grading terminology to make the comparison clearer.

Choose the Arrival You Can Manage

Before paying, confirm collection or delivery arrangements, delay plans, claim conditions, and the instructions supplied with the fish. Schedule arrival when you can attend it and have quarantine ready. If records are unclear or your system is not ready, postpone the purchase rather than treating enthusiasm as proof of readiness. See seller comparison and visual selection checks.
