What Is a Koi Fish? Identity, Varieties & Care

Koi are ornamental carp selected for color, pattern, and body form. Often called nishikigoi, they are large, long-lived pond fish whose appeal combines visual beauty with the changing character of living animals.

From Carp to Nishikigoi

The modern ornamental tradition is closely associated with Niigata, Japan. Generations of breeders selected attractive fish and their descendants, developing recognizable varieties. 'Brocaded carp' captures the visual effect of nishikigoi without implying that every koi is expensive or suitable for a show.

Varieties Rather Than Separate Species

Kohaku are red and white; Sanke and Showa add black in different arrangements. Ogon are single-colored metallic fish, while Asagi are known for blue-gray reticulated scaling and red-orange areas. These names identify forms within the koi tradition, rather than unrelated species that happen to share a pond.

More Than Color

Scale arrangement, metallic skin, reflective Ginrin scales, body form, and fin length can add to a description. Doitsu means reduced scaling; it is not simply another color. Read the whole fish rather than assigning a name from a bright patch in one photograph.

Large Fish with Ongoing Needs

A small juvenile can grow into a substantial adult. Suitable swimming space, oxygen, filtration, waste removal, and a complete diet are essential. Some koi learn familiar feeding cues, but friendliness varies. Their potential to live for decades makes them a continuing responsibility rather than a seasonal decoration.

A Good Starting Point

Before buying, check your habitat and receiving plan. Enjoyment does not depend on show grades or prestige prices. Read the carp relationship, koi versus goldfish, adult size, and purchase readiness to decide whether koi suit your home.
